TRAVEL: paris undiscovered - my top ten places to visit in the city.

[en] paris ranges among my most beloved places on earth and it definitely has much more to offer than the eiffel tower. today i want to show you my top ten places in paris not every tourist might be aware of. good food and drinks included!

et voilà – here they are!

Shakespeare & Company.

a very picturesque and famous book store in the rue de la bûcherie near notre dame de paris with an impressive history and an attached coffee shop where you can have anything from breakfast to lunch and great vegan dishes – the granola muesli with vegan coconut yoghurt and fresh berries is ah-ma-zing! of course the fantastic intellectual flair is all-inclusive.

the book store also offers various literary evenings with famous and aspiring novelists and writers.

fun fact: every employee in the book store and the café speaks an accent-free british english. to find something like this in france is really special – i know that from experience!

insider tip: the 30 questions from the proust questionnaire which you will find on every meal tray at the shakespeare & company café are very inspiring and worth being answered - my post about the latter will follow soon, so stay tuned!

Musée de l'Orangerie – Les Nymphéas.

by now it might not be a total insider anymore but still it's much more intimate than the way too overcrowded louvre and (in my opinion) its totally overrated mona lisa. the louvre has much more to offer (and also rooms where you will find no other soul) but okay, we don't want to beat around the bush and i wanted to tell you about the musée the l'orangerie!

it's worth a visit, not only because the two enchanting showrooms displaying the beautiful nymphéas by claude monet, but also because of the exclusive, intimate atmosphere and the various special exhibitions – this year we saw beautiful and not so well known artworks of impressionist and expressionist masters including the portrait of mademoiselle chanel by marie laurencin.

Rooftop Bar Galéries Lafayette.

the best view over paris and its eiffel tower is totally free. you can enjoy it on top of the worlds most famous luxury shopping mall galéries lafayette – best enjoyed with a sparkling glass of champagne!

Chanel Paris Le Marais.

this will be a must have for any chanel fan – a picture in front of the larger-than-life sized letters in the inner yard of the chanel store in the parisian district le marais.
for us as well, also due to the fact that we didn't make it to her appartement in the rue berger this year. but we'll make good for that next year!

KONG.

i guess the food only plays a supporting role in this pan-asian restaurant but the innovative interior design and the panoramic view of this restaurant and bar are definitely a must-see in paris! the geisha cocktail also was super delicious. its song list is also worth listening to, with fantastic electronic music and namable musicians from all over europe.

when i first visited the KONG in 2009 it also had a doorkeeper but now you'll only find a concierge on the upper floor. yet you still should bet on the cocktail dresscode.

Ladurée Le Bar Champs-Elysées.

alice in wonderland meets arielle - you could describe the concept of this bar like this. it's definitely a place you have to visit once in your life. i'm in love with the aquatic and floral lines. the play of blue and golden coloration is beautiful and luxurious.
the waiters are also very polite and outgoing, always up to having a natter with the guests.
some years ago when i still was a subscriber to the fashion magazine elle, the bar was mentioned as a must see in paris.

it is located in the ladurée flagship store on the famous champs-elysées boulevard but it also has its own side entrance where you can get directly into the bar.

insider tip: all the delicacies which you can buy at the pâtisserie are also available in the bar.

perfect combo: a beautiful pink macaron à la rose accompanied by a glass of sparkling ladurée champagne brut rose.

Église Sainte-Chapelle.

my beloved notre dame de paris is still beautiful and still hasn't lost its charm with its beautiful catherine window, but you shouldn't lose the chance to visit sainte-chapelle at least once in your life time.

it's the palace chapel of the former royal palace in paris and also has been a save haven for marie antoinette.

the sainte-chapelle is a two-storey church which I believe to be unique because I have never seen anything comparable to it.

when entering the ground level you will feel yourself reminded of arabian nights and you can see manifold moorish details in its architecture.
on the upper level you will enter a miscellaneousness of rosecoloured and violet stained glass windows and golden details.

insider tip: purchase a sainte-chapelle/conciergerie combo ticket at a cost of 15€. you will save some euros and also precious wait time by jumping the queue.

Conciergerie.

this masterpiece of architecture is vivid history and, as well as the sainte-chapelle, a must visit for any marie antoinette fan who is interested in her biography and the doom she had to face. marie antoinette spent her remaining years in the conciergerie and finally also got executed within its halls.

Au Vieux Paris d'Arcole.

this might be the most dreamy, romantic and beautiful getaway throughout paris and the perfect spot for an intimate dîner or a glass of red wine. it is located in a narrow side road which can easily be missed and the best: it is near the cathedral notre dame.

au vieux paris d'arcole also is one of the oldest buildings in the whole of paris. its proprietor is a real character and you can guess that he is blessed with an unbridled joie de vivre.

Else Paris.

at the restaurant else in paris you can enjoy incredible aromatic and tangy israeli cuisine. you will find it within walking distance from the musée du louvre at 49, rue berger.

and last but not least - because no trip to paris is completed without it - ...

… the tour eiffel – it's my last item in todays travel post. absolutely no insider, of course, because it's the quintessential parisian landmark.

it was constructed by french engineer and name giver alexandre gustave eiffel. the eiffel tower was built between the years of 1887 to 1889 for the purposes of the world exhibition which took place in paris in the year of 1889.
it was regarded as earths highest building and retained this status until the completion of the chrysler building in NYC.

at the beginning this quite despicable building made of steel wasn't quite in favour of the elegant parisian population. the inhabitants rather regarded it as something which ruined the townscape of their beautiful home town.

when the world exhibition of 1889 came to an end the whole of paris decided on not knocking down the eiffel tower but to retain it as their landmark.

but heck, could you imagine paris without the eiffel tower? it's totally difficult to imagine that! and yes, in 2007 this building of steel also experienced its own wedding ceremony and became the 'husband' of erika la tour eiffel, formerly erika labrie - as a result it keeps me guessing whether the tour eiffel lives a poly- or monogamous life ... ?!

i hope that you enjoyed todays post and that i inspired you to experience paris on a whole new level!

have you ever been to the city of love?

et voilà – meine 10 liebsten (geheimen) plätze in paris:

Shakespeare & Company.
